Open Jaw redemption in different travel zones

Season's Greetings,

I'm just off the phone to the BAEC call centre (naively thought Christmas Day would be quiet and a short wait time . I have an Avios Amex 2:1 CW booking for travel LHR to Denver in late Jan. Thanks to work, I need to change it and the availability is non existent in J for the next few months apart from 18th Feb for the outbound leg.

Trying to work around this, I see there is fair availability on the NYC-LHR route, so phone up to try to make an open jaw booking (would purchase a connecting flight myself from DEN to NYC), however I was told by the agent that is is not possible as both legs of the jaw need to be in the same travel zone.

Is this correct? I can see reasons why it could be, but as long as the pricing was done on the longest leg I can't see how it would harm BA.

If I my strategy is going to be stymied can anyone help me identify which airports are in the same zone as Denver?

Appreciate your advice!
