1. The place to start is with your travel insurance. That should cover a full refund or change fee for her ticket, depending on her needs.

2. You can always call the carrier and see what can be done. The likely answer is that medical conditions are dealt with by #1 (insurance), but it is always possible that you hit the right agent who is willing to move the flight a bit (how much more time does she need)?
