I´d agree that you´d probably be fine IF you´re talking about a Canadian airport. If you´re talking about an airport outside Canada with only a few flights a day it´s possible there won´t be any agent at the counters when you arrive. IIRC there´s also a clause in the T&C that you technically need to have checked in based on the scheduled departure time, though that´s not always enforced.
