I would definitely just take the high speed train. We did that last April.

From Shanghai to Beijing via Hongqiao Railway station. I believe the entire trip was under 5 hours. Super smooth, comfortable, assigned seats, and cheap. I think it was $80 USD plus $5 fees (We had our Hotel book the train tickets ahead of time).
