Has there been a rethink of the aircraft operating the route, or just unavailability of 772's?

I'd like to know as I'm going to BKK early Feb and looking to upgrade from WT+.

Unfortunately it is not a rethink. But BA has replaced the 3-class 772 with a 747 over the busy Christmas period and is operating it as a 3-class, no F, aircraft.

My wife travelled on BA9 on 19 Dec, at the 72h point F was opened up (by mistake I suspect) I moved her from 14A (my 747 favourite) to 2K. At check in at 24h, F was closed and she had been moved to 62A. I told her to ask if it was reopened as she left the T5 First lounge - she travelled in 4K.
