Somehow, when the newer phones came out, they lost that ability!
True that. I still have a BB9800 around for that reason. I remember 3-4years ago I was near a holy site in a rural part of India and one of the religious hotels had wifi and it was so great to call back to the U.S. without any charge. And before that I had their flip samsung phone with the UMA technology.

SIDE NOTE: Since calling party pays is in effect in most countries on mobile calls there is a higher charge to call mobile lines (10-40 cents depending on country) - in the US when someone dials us it comes out of our mins/usage in most other countries when someone calls your cellphone inbound calls are free to the phone user but the person calling you is paying a higher rate to call you.
When you are roaming out of the country you get 20c per min in or out calls to any other of the 100+ countries on the simple roaming list (e.g. call the US while in Japan; 20 cents a min, call the UK while in Japan; 20 cents a min - THERE are some higher countries - all of them NOT on the simple roaming list)
Can you show me the link for the 70 countries from the U.S.?
