Does anyone really care about short haul business class anymore?
I'd disagree with you on AA/ UA and Delta. The soft-products are comparable outside of afternoon tea time (it's a seat with some champers and a basic meal, essentially), but at least in the US the "First Class" seats are larger. CE seats are almost the same as ET and with the announcement of 30 inch space will become even more so.
I think you're right though - this is happening because there's not a domestic (European) demand for anything better.
