I know I am an outlier here:

I MR all year, and don't really care about the status. I have a spread sheet with every potential trip I may take in any given year ranging from work to family weddings to MR's.

In any given year I know exactly how many miles I need to bank, to spend on the following years award trip with my wife. I take the price of two coach RT's...say $1,000 each of easy math, and MR that much. Added to credit cards miles, trips employers pay for, and other miles there is my 'free' airfare for vacation. 2013 is done and in 2014 we plan on going back to Thailand, in 2015 she will be turning an age ending in 0 so I need to earn enough miles for a trip in Feb of 2015.

That's just me.
