Do I need my passport for domestic leg of international trip?

I have an AA US domestic one-way coming up with a 7 month US Gateway Stopover, followed by a leg to Europe next September. Since it is all booked as a single one-way, it shows as an international itinerary and won't allow online checkin without passport info.

Are we okay with just our US Drivers Licenses for the domestic leg? I ask this because we don't have our passports with us

Thanks,

FF
