Unfortunately it's more or less impossible to get J award seats on NZ's routes to/from North America and, lately, to/from most of the Pacific Islands. It's only a few North Asian routes (NRT, PVG) which seem to have any award availability at all.

If using Delta miles, then you could presumably choose to return on KE via ICN which might be a nice alternative.
