Booking <24 hours on WN won't guarantee you an A BP unless you booked BS (even then it won't guarantee it). You can board at the end of the A group, which should leave you enough aisle or window seats and overhead space.
Each program has their benefits. Alaska is a very good airline but so is WN. You can't beat the WN schedule on many of my routes. There are so many flights to choose from it can be a little overwhelming at times.
