How reliable are taxis there in terms of fairness in pricing? In some cities - Athens comes to mind - we were advised to book a specific cab through the hotel concierge, who gave us the price it should cost and the taxi number to look for (this was the evening before), and we were told to pay nothing else and to be sure to take the taxi that had been booked. Worked perfectly.
Yep, it was metered it and it was on spec to what we were expecting so it was all good.
I've read some crazy stories about Athens taxi pricing tho.

That's actually a long story. We weren't going to pay for a hotel the last night and just stay out all night, leaving our luggage at the hotel. However, the other couple we were with wanted to at least a bit of sleep no matter what. We basically combined our bookings so we ended up with a room the last night too. We would have considered staying out all night and just sleep on the plane and the transatlantic flight home.

If there was pricing differences between the cabs, I'd then considering picking and choosing. I couldn't tell. Didn't check to see if there was pricing in the window.
