Shady dealings at Enterprise

I'll try to keep it short and stick to the facts:
  • Car they're renting to me has several small dings, dents and scratches
  • Enterprise employee refuses to document them, since they're "smaller than a golf ball" (this should have been the first red flag)
  • Second attempt at alerting him to the damage is fruitless. By this time, we already spent half an hour, because his iPad crashed and he had to get a paper form, and fill it out again
  • By then, we were anxious to get off the lot, so I just accepted (big mistake)
  • Upon return, another employee did the walk-around, check the fuel gauge, gave me a printout of the settled contract
  • While waiting for our shuttle bus, said employee calls me back
  • Points out a scratch in the exact same area of the pre-existing damage
  • I tell him that the guy at the first inspection didn't record it because it's too small
  • He replies that the golf ball rule does exist, but there's a scratch that goes below the clear coat and is longer than an inch

Long story short, they're holding me responsible for repairing that whole area. As far as I understand it, the insurance provided by my credit card will cover it, because it's lower than the deductible on my personal car comprehensive car insurance. But I still feel cheated. It's a bit weird that this new scratch conveniently appeared in the area that had the pre-existing damage. The existing scratches were all straight and parallel, whereas this new, deeper scratch is crooked and is at an angle. Looks a lot like someone took a key to it. But who would take a key to the area next to the wheel?

Here are the pictures they provided. You can see the scratch in question in the second picture. All the dings and dents were there before I rented the car.

Any advice on what I should do?

For the future, I will:
  • Stay away from Enterprise
  • If the agent refuses to mark preexisting damage, insist on a different vehicle with no preexisting damage (good luck finding one)...
