Just don't take no for an answer. At the end of the day you have a contract. They are legally obliged to accommodate you.
Right. Don't take no. And do have a reasonable alternative airline or route that you are willing to accept. In cases like this, I have had AE buy Z fares on a different airline in order to make the itinerary work (this was FRA-JNB so although an AC change in FRA-YYC was responsible for the invalid itinerary, AE had to fix it by re-routing me on SAA on Z fare). Be polite but firm. No reason at all that you should pay more or be flying on different days here.
