Socrates I am not denigrating the entire industry or all of its employees, many of whom are exemplary. Just relating my observations and conclusions about housekeeping, which I think are consistent with the observations of many other FTers on this thread. I would grant you that most Marriott housekeepers are friendly enough, but clearly they are: (1) not properly trained or (2) don't understand or (3) don't care - because if all of these conditions were met then we would not see them routinely walking in rooms with DND or making hallway noise when people are trying to sleep.
I am sorry you were offended, this was not meant as a slur against Marriott or your former colleagues at the front desk (though I have my complaints with that part of the operation, too). But let's face it - these days the industry is comprised of many front line employees who are not highly paid, and IME many who are non-native English speakers. You get what you pay for.
