I'm surprised that DL is so willing to board much earlier than what they know is the earliest time they can leave the gate. It annoys the passengers, but doesn't it also start the three hours on the tarmac countdown if people are trapped on the plane? Passengers could complain to DOT and I don't think saying that the door was open because there were no pilots would be a good defense.
