Roppongi was originally called 材木町 (Zaimokuchou) or "wood material area"

I think the name Roppongi is a small leap from that.

Nishi-azabu was originally called 霞町　(kasumichou) or Mist area

which makes sense as it is in a ravine.

The old names are so much more fun than the new ones.
