I agree with you as well, however, immediate family traveling on same itinerary but different PNR should share preferred seat access.
ie spouse joins you on business trip

The one I hate is when you want to use AP miles for family tix and pay for yours to ensure status, they won't allow family access to preferred seats, however if all seats were booked with AP on single PNR - no problem.
