AA has two flights every day for the city I want to go, one at 8pm, one at 9pm. I was booked on the 8pm one.

Now suddenly I received notification that the 8pm one has been changed to 7pm, and the 9pm one has been changed to 8pm. Can I ask them to change me onto the now 8pm (before was 9pm) flight for free?

I can't imagine they just change time of the flight and expect people to just deal with it?
