Corfu, Greece (Cruise stop)

We visited Corfu, Greece in Nov 2013. It was one of the port of calls on a Celebrity Silhouette cruise.

I have put many pictures on my blog. The rest of the post gives a snapshot.

Corfu is a Greek island. During summer, I gather that the island is quite crowded. However, we went during off-season and it was certainly rather quiet. The weather wasn't perfect, but at least we got to see most of the sights, albeit very briefly.

This coloured brochure printed by Celebrity cruises is always fun to read.

We arranged for our own private excursion, using a company called Corfu Sunrise. They are actually a car rental company located just opposite the port. Originally, the plan was to rent a car and self-drive. However, it turned out that getting a driver together with the rental car was also inexpensive, therefore we decided to save the hassle of self-driving. This turned out to be a very good decision because there was a lot of ground to cover and some of the roads were very, very narrow! The cost of car rental plus the driver was only 90 Euros for the day, minus petrol fees. That came up to 25 Euros. I thought the price was very inexpensive.

We took a rather long and winding drive up, pass this small town (Lakones), to get to these views.

We would be visiting this monastery later.

Took a hike up to this ancient castle - Angelocastro. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelokastro_(Corfu)

The hike up looked formidable, but my kids could do it easily. After that, they ran down so quickly.

Unfortunately for us, the gates were locked so we couldn't get into the castle proper. Still, the views from the gate were great!

Views from Kaisers Throne. This stop was beautiful. Highly recommend, and free of charge!! Look carefully and you may see the ship.

We also visited this museum, which was supposedly rather famous. Compared to the sites you see in Italy, this is just another big and nice mansion.

On our way back to the town centre, we passed Corfu airport. During summer, this place was busy. But not now.

We stopped briefly at the town center and took a short walk before heading back the ship. By this time, kids were already tired and they wanted to return to the ship!

Overall, there was a lot of driving done that day. Winding and narrow roads. I was glad we had a good driver! I did notice that other cruisers were rather adventurous. A number of them rented cars and self-drove. Well done!
