I agree that AVIS shouldn't be paying for the speeding ticket as that was based on your driving. But the expired insurance, I would still push with AVIS as that was their responsibility to make sure their cars are "drivable".
Yes, I'm sure my email of, "While I was knowing exceeding the speed limit by 18mph in the car I rented from you, I was pulled over, and got a speeding ticket. At that time I also got a ticket for expired inspection. I want you to pay that part of my ticket" would go a long way............
