I think you're confusing two different things (the Gmail app vs. a Google Apps account).
If you use the free Gmail, instead of the built-in Mail app from Apple, you can get push notifications for your Gmail accounts. And, as noted, the Gmail app lets you manage your email (archive/delete/move/label) much better than the stock mail app.
