I would try to get as far north of New Haven as possible before stopping. Traffic on 95 in CT comes to a stand still for no apparent reason every couple of miles.

I live in northeast PA, my youngest is at university of new haven. Always take 287-hutch river-Merritt-derby turnpike. The stretch of 95 from NYC to New Haven is the 11th circle of hell, but TomTom seems to love it!
