Currently have just under 47 000 miles and will need 60 000 miles for my travel. Depends on the airline, some open up lots of space last minute (LH) others have nada.
If you have a specific trip in mind, and if you are not already using them, the quickest way to generate miles is through an Amex MR card - these post the bonuses immediately upon completion of spend requirements ($500-$1000-$3000), no delays for statement dates and convert instantaneously.
If you already have those cards, then ask a family member if for Christmas they will let you recommend them an excellent card at no fee with $250 or 25k miles free. Referral bonuses also post the next day.
