DECEMBER 16, 1960: Two airliners collided in midair over New York on this day in 1960 – killing all 128 people on board both planes and six people on the ground amid snow and fog.

United Airlines Flight 826, which had lost its navigation system, smashed into Trans World Airlines Flight 266 at 5,250ft above a military airfield in Staten Island.
