Speaking as a Brighton line commuter (as well as a regular LGW user), I think you can thank the Great British Public for that. Before the barriers, fare dodging was absolutely rife at LGW - indeed I think it was supposed to be the worse in the UK at one point. That's why you'll still see Revenue Inspectors on the gate to deter those tempted to jump over them!

Wasn't this implemented as part of the additional security measures after the attempted car bombing of GLA in 2007? Certainly at LGW it is now impossible to get a car anywhere near the entrances to both the North and South terminals.
