First leg of trip cancelled -- what normally happens?

Hi all,

I've browsed flyertalk off and on for a while but never registered. So hello finally! I tried searching for my question but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

Recently AA cancelled the first leg of my itinerary (CMI - ORD) but the next flight remained uncancelled. I tried to call to AA reservations but gave up after a several hours so I could get some sleep (this was during the DFW ice madness so I'm sure the hold times were absurd).

I know if you skip the first leg of your trip they will cancel the entire itinerary, but I didn't know what would happen if AA cancelled it. I found other transportation to ORD and was able to check in without any problem.

My question is -- is this standard procedure? Presumably AA would have normally rebooked me automatically if they didn't also have a jillion other people that needed rebooking, so I don't know if this is a normal thing or not.

My other observation in this situation is that calling the PLT help desk is NOT helpful if the ticket is booked through a corporate travel agent (I booked through my corporate travel site) since apparently you have to talk to the 'Meeting Services' department. Staying on hold for 3+ hours only to find out you have to be transferred to another department is not really all that fun.
