I guess, plane + train would be convenient ... what do you people say?

None of your previous replies mentioned this, which might be useful if you have other US travel plans: except in a few areas, train service in the US is either not available or so sketchy as to be barely usable. Americans generally depend on cars for transportation around a hundred-mile radius or so, airlines for more than three or four hundred miles. For destinations in between, one or the other mode may be more convenient.
Buses aren't as bad as they used to be. They're traditionally used by lower-class and marginalized people, which tends to scare richer folks. I took a Greyhound Express bus from Cincinnati, Ohio to Nashville, Kentucky not too long ago when vertigo made driving too dangerous and flying unthinkable. The bus had wifi that wasn't very usable, but it also had electrical outlets to plug in smartphones & whatnot. Bus stations are traditionally found in old, run-down parts of town, but Greyhound (the one nationwide bus company) has improved its security and cleaned up the stations (the ones I saw, anyway) considerably.
