Final update:
After nothing happened for a while I contacted AI ecommerce as follows:

Dear Ecommerce Team,
after a significant schedule change occured I tried to cancel this ticket online but it was not possible. So I went to the ticket counter at 0800LT on the day of departure and cancelled the ticket. Please refund the amount charged as per the rules to the credit card.

Regards Oliver
Surprise, I got an almost immediate response:

Dear Sir,
We have noted down your request for refund.
The amount will be credited within 2 week's time.

Regards,

Yesterday I found out that they refunded the complete amount paid ^ to my card. The only damage on my end was about 12€ in currency changes. I know that amount would feed a videowallahs family for a week, but considering I was looking at about 4000+ Rs damage I'm a very happy camper!
