This is quite concerning to me, as I do not want to have any issues on my flight to China, and I am seriously considering paying $140 for the regular tourist visa. Am I filling out that form incorrectly, have the rules recently changed, or is the system not up to date?
The link you provided for Star Alliance is up-to-date and it is showing the correct information on 72 hours. You are probably not entering information correctly. I assume since you mention a $140 visa cost that your nationality is USA. Make sure that China is selected under the Transit Point field not the Destination field. Destination must be a third country to be eligible for any Transit Without Visa.
