I will have had >200 nights by the end of this year combined with the highest revenues since joining SPG (many paid nights at St. Regis, Westin and W properties, 0 nights at 4Points hotels, always paid cash upgrades when staying on points) but it also was the worst year in terms of suite upgrades (less than 5% of stays).
So either my ambassador is doing a poor job, I am staying at the wrong hotels, the hotels do not like me or the hotels simply upgrade based on a different logic than total revenues/stays (which in my opinion is not justified).
I have had a good year for upgrades compared to last. Often receiving suite upgrades without asking.
I usually stay in Westins, W's, Sheratons, in that order. What I don't usually do is spend more than $200/night unless I don't have a choice. I own my company so it's generally my money I'm spending. Maybe my rate sensitivity puts me in nicer properties when they have lower occupancy and that gets me more upgrades. Who knows.
