I was trying to substitute a better-timed domestic FC connecting flight on an award ticket, so I had been watching for low inventory to appear on several alternative flights and it finally did on one of them. It wouldn't have been right to ask an agent to check for upgrade inventory on these flights just to satisfy my curiosity.
