Unless someone can give me a compelling reason to drive through The Bronx (other than that I've never been in The Bronx), that route is at the bottom of my list. I have driven to/through/near NYC, at various times of day, and it is something I'd rather avoid at all costs.
I'm planning to head out from PA by 10am, with a goal to be in Providence by 5pm, with perhaps stops for Starbucks and lunch somewhere enroute.
We used to take the route you describe (to exit 92) a couple of times a year.
I would avoid the Bronx route at all costs. Once in a while, my husband would think it was "safe" (like at 5 am) and we always got snarled in some sort of traffic mess.
I would try to get as far north of New Haven as possible before stopping. Traffic on 95 in CT comes to a stand still for no apparent reason every couple of miles.
