We used to take the route you describe (to exit 92) a couple of times a year.

I would avoid the Bronx route at all costs. Once in a while, my husband would think it was "safe" (like at 5 am) and we always got snarled in some sort of traffic mess.

I would try to get as far north of New Haven as possible before stopping. Traffic on 95 in CT comes to a stand still for no apparent reason every couple of miles.
