To the OP - yes, UA can absolutely rebook you on AA for a cancelled flight, and should. As another poster noted, HUACA.
I'm on hold with an agent who understood my request and is calling AA right now...

1:20 wait on AA for her...she said she couldn't wait that long...nor can I really. Guess I'll just chance it tonight with my flight.
