To be clear, you cannot throw it out if you want any VAT return at the airport on the way back, or if you want VAT-free car rentals or hotel stays. Technically, you can't throw it out at all until you leave since this is your visa, but really, they can look that up in the computer.
Finally, you need that to get through the automated gates separating the passport control room from the baggage claim hall - THEN you can throw it out!
