Driving from NE PA to Providence, RI

Hello--

I'm staying with my Mom in Mountain Top, PA (about halfway between Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton). This Thursday, I'm driving to Providence, RI.

There seem to be 3 different route options:
1. I-81 to I-84 to Hartford, then state highways the rest of the way
2. I-80, somehow connecting nearly directly to I-95 (going through The Bronx), then that all the way in
3. I-80 to I-287N, to I-87S, to I-95.

I'm leaning toward option #3, as it seems to be on highways the whole time, while avoiding NYC for the most part. Unless someone from NYC wants to meet me for a coffee or lunch in The Bronx, I don't have any reason to go there.

But I've never been on the 287 or the 87. How is the drive? Many tolls? Heck, I've never been on the 95 through CT either.

I drove in from the Boston area on Saturday (yesterday). Took the I-90 (Mass Pike) to the I-84 all the way to Scranton, then the I-81 South. I had done that route before, and it was fine (well other than construction on the 81, which seems a bit late in the year, but that's another story).

Which of the 3 would you suggest, or am I missing another viable option?

Oh, and the reason for Providence... I have a goal to go to all 50 states before I turn 50. I've never been to Rhode Island, so will hit that, stay there Thurs night, before I head back to Boston.
