Flying within Thailand - necessary to have passport on person?

I will be applying for a travel visa for India while I am in Thailand. However, I may need to fly (e.g. Bangkok to Chiang Mai) in the period while the visa application will be processed (approximately 5 business days). Will I be able to fly using an American ID, such as a driver's license and a photocopy of my passport? Or only with my passport physically on me?
