You probably just had a former Navy flier as your pilot (thinking he was taking off form and landing on an aircraft carrier). A true lack of familiarity would mean they would not let pilots fly these planes.
Navy pilots don't actually brake on landing but rather apply full power when the wheels touch down in case the hook missss the cables. ;-)
