Another factor in this is that ATC at DEN may have asked your pilot to fly as slowly as they were comfortable with in order to create additional space with the aircraft in front of yours. Otherwise if you get to close or don't allow enough time between arrivals your plane would likely be forced to abort the approach, go around, and try again. This is a fairly routine occurrence at busy airports.
