I think Jclass is saying that buying separate 1 way tickets (3 or 4 in total?) is cheaper than the fare on the available direct flight.

Am I correct Jclass or just totally messed up here?

Yes, if the Fun fare is not available. Fun fare direct flight YUL to YVR was $254 before tax. It is sold out. My only choice on ACs website, even using advance options was to book a latitude fare at $929 plus tax on the morning direct flight. However, if I book YUL to YYZ and then book YYZ to YVR (2 seperate tickets) the fun fare is available on those flights and they get me into YVR when I need to be.

Although it costs me about $350 more than if I booked the fun fare on the direct flight YUL to YVR (which I can't since it is sold out), the 2 tickets are still about $600 + cheaper than booking the latitude fare on the direct flight.
