It is a published feature of the service. It shouldn't be in any way an inconvenience to deliver the mandated service standards. I just politely tell the crew what I want and when I want to eat it when asked for an order. I don't ask for permission.
I'm sort of in the middle, as it's part of the service I won't say "will it be an inconvenience", but I do say "will it be OK if I..." giving them a chance to suggest an alternative if my request would cause problems.
