If you bought a round-trip ticket because it was cheaper than a one-way, be very careful about cancelling the return half. If you were to cancel, the airline could in theory re-fare you to the one-way fare for the travel you've actually done and demand that you pay the difference. If so, it would be cheaper to simply not use the return half of the ticket because your plans have changed (which they genuinely have).
