The only way I would "throw away" the avios would be if I didn't take the flight, and the only way I would do that would be if I land a job. However it sounds like they are refundable so it's a non-issue.
You are quite correct though, in a worst-case scenario it's certainly preferable to lose £350 in fees and 75k avios than over £1000 cash.
I am going to cancel the current return leg booking, and apply whatever small refund I get against the fees & taxes on the redemption.
