modifying a return flight beyond 1 year

When I was planning my move to the UK last January, I purchased a semi-flex return ticket for two reasons: A - it was cheaper than a one-way, and B - if things went pear-shaped, I had an escape route at the ready for just the cost of the change fee. Since I had no idea when (or indeed if) I would be needing the return leg, I picked the farthest date in the future that I could book at the time - January 2014. I flew the outbound in March of 2013, and the return booking has been sitting in my BAEC account since.

Well, as it turns out, things have not gone according to plan (no job). Looking ahead I will probably run out of money some time in May of 2014 but when I go to move the return booking to around then, it tells me I cannot change the return leg beyond 365 days (of the booking date or the outbound flight I'm not sure).

Is this a website limitation, or a limitation of the ticketing system? Am I likely to get a different answer on the phone?
