I think this is pretty much impossible (unless irrops/~1hr delay and you get the revised itin message) ...I've never had success with SDCing this one.

I flew on Monday, a busy travel day - especially the Monday after Thanksgiving, on a full Y ticket instant-upgraded to JN. I tried and tried and did not see any SDC options. I do see U class fare available if I do a new ticket so I suppose Y would also be available.
Is it because the system was looking for JN and could not find any? I suppose an agent could have done something for me?

Hmm, i've never had trouble getting SDC options to show when I'm in R - perhaps its different with JN. Where you trying to change the routing at all?
