You are checking in with HA, many people think they haven't implemented the rules correctly, but most likely you will end up paying HA's mainland bag fees. For that you won't have to reclaim/recheck/reclear security in HNL. Up to you if that's worth the $8 you think you would save by short-checking your bag, which is most likely not going to happen anyway if the flights are on the same ticket.
However, YMMV, you'll find out. Either way it's not worth getting upset about. If you think they overcharged you or shouldn't be charging you, file a DOT bag fee complaint.

HA agents are robots taught to use the the ATPCO Baggage Calculator. The calculator spits out a number that is based on how UA files their fees for that particular itinerary.
The issue is with how UA files their fees, not HA.
Still, I'd bring a copy of your receipt. You might get a nice agent who might just waive all fees.
