I have two separate reservations with less than 24 hours between them. When I list out my reservations, there is an option to link them.

What does this actually mean? Will it work if one reservation is for two people and one is only for myself?

I'd like to link the two so I'll be protected if there's a significant delay on the return of the first leg.
