Happened a lot to me at LHR T1. But I asked them to confirm what the official gate closing time is (10 minutes before departure), and they admitted that they don't close the gate before that. So let them shout as much as they want...
For those who want to try it: this was at least a year ago, so confirm what the current cut-off time is before you do so.
But to get back on topic: the screens at SIN do seem to be pretty useless too. But at a place like LHR it annoys me even more, while at SIN I somehow don't care (because it is in general such a great airport).
