Answer is always sleeping for me (sleeping, not eating and drinking a lot of water in the lounge being the best way for me not to suffer from jet lag).
I fully share your last paragraph. I think that your, my, and others' (
Goldorak, Macaron95,, etc) mixed experiences suggest to me that as (too?) often with AF, it all depends on the crew. As always, AF have a high proportion of fantastic crew which will go out of their way to ensure the passengers' best experience, but if you are unlucky enough to get one of the less-nice/less-bothered crew, they may 'take a guess' as to whether you would like to be woken up or not. As in other areas, this makes AF typically less consistent than many competitors, and makes it possible that you would have the equivalent of a near 'butler service' with a lovely crew member making a personal effort to know if you want to be woken up and taking ownership for your well-being, or 'business minus' experience when you get woken up even though you did not want to. And as others have mentioned, they used to have those stickers so I'm really unclear what's the idea behind removing them if it is not to replace them by something better!
