I wish I could do that! On the ZRH routes all preferred seats on all flights I have taken in the last 2 years were taken long out. Without any exception. And SQ doesn't guarantee me an aisle seat ... so I have to make an effort not to fly SQ

Which as you say is a pity as they have a very decent product. And it could be enhanced with such few zero-cost modifications. Segregate the cabin into elites and non-elites, let the former pick all the seats in their section. They can still charge for preferred, I don't mind.
That would enhance the experience a whole lot.
